Coffee in Puerto Rico

In the year 1736, the first coffee plant was transported from Africa to Puerto Rico, probably in one of the frequent travel of the slave trade days.
Mountain-dwelling farmers, particularly Corsican immigrants during the 19th century, helped found the foundation of what would soon become a lucrative and coffee aristocracy in Puerto Rico,

connoissseurs producing what many consider to be the best coffee in the world. Due to its peculiar taste and incomparable aroma,

coffee from Puerto Rico was praised in Spain, France, Italy and Germany, turning quickly in favor of the drink of kings, popes, and the literary elite.

Espresso (from the Italian "espresso") denotes a process of preparation and if prepared correctly, a coffee mill. Using an espresso machine, hot (not boiling) is very low streaming high pressure through very finely ground coffee, to create a powerful and highly flavored coffee.

Purists insist on drinking it black. In Puerto Rico, one express is also known as a "well" referring to the small cup in which it serves.

Cortadito (from Spanish, meaning "a little cut") is the name given to a portion of espresso laced with a few drops of warm milk.

Coffee with milk refers to the traditional steamed milk is added before serving. Similar to a French cafe con leche, coffee with milk is served in a full cup size. In more traditional settings, coffee is made using a 'sock', although the practice is rapidly becoming obsolete.
